Fashion
Museum (MoMu) - Antwerp
MoMu
is a museum devoted to fashion, clothing, costume
and textiles.
Founded
on the inheritance from the former Textile and
Costume Museum Vrieselhof, the MoMu collection
consists of clothing, lace, embroidery, fabrics
and tools for textile processing dating back to
the 16th century, complemented with collection
pieces by contemporary (Belgian) fashion designers.
MoMu
also assumes an important laboratory function:
the freedom to experiment with different interdisciplinary
approaches, to take out time for research and
give the public an opportunity to dwell on the
various aspects of fashion. More specifically,
MoMu intends to combine a varied, interdisciplinary
exhibition policy with publications, a scientific
library and spacious public reading room, lectures,
conferences, workshops, actual items and projects
in the MoMu Gallery and film projections in the
MoMu Cinema. In this manner, the museum wants
to become a lively meeting-place and well-equipped
study centre for anyone interested in clothing,
fashion and textiles, their social and cultural
backgrounds, techniques and design.
The location of MoMu ties in very closely with
this vision and approach. Together with the
Flanders Fashion Institute (FFI) and the renowned
fashion department of Hogeschool Antwerpen, MoMu
houses in the 'ModeNatie', a beautifully restored
19th-century building in the cultural and historical
centre of Antwerp. The synergy that will be
achieved through cohabitation of designers, fashion
students,
staff of the FFI and MoMu will result
in a fruitful collaboration with national and
international designers, stylists, artists, museum
directors, conservators, architects etc.

MoMu website.
