La Centrale Electrique
European Center for Contemporary Art of the City of Brussels
In June 2006 the City of Brussels opened a new space, La Centrale Electrique, dedicated to contemporary art.
La Centrale Electrique is located in the heart of Brussels, Place Sainte-Catherine, at walking distance from the Grand-Place, in one of the liveliest quarters of Brussels where fashion, design and artistic creation flourish. This remarkable, half-industrial building, constructed between 1901 and 1903, was the City's first power plant and, until recently, housed the Workshops of the Department of Urbanism of the City.
La Centrale électrique will harbor no permanent collection, but will have four major shows a year presenting established Belgian and International artists as well as upcoming art. Open to partnerships and exchange, mostly European, La Centrale Electrique will offer a space for creation and experiment to all artists.
Next to the youth workshops, a pedagogical program will accompany each exhibition and conferences and colloquiums will be held, as well as film and video projections.
Collaboration with schools and art academies is an integral part of this program.
