The Art of Folon in Belgium - A Cultural Journey

In 2008 visitors can experience a unique cultural journey as several major exhibitions throughout the country will highlight the art of Jean Michel Folon. Best known in the United States for his cover page drawings for the New Yorker and Time magazine Jean Michel Folon’s work encompasses watercolors, screen prints, sculptures in wood, plaster and bronze, engravings, stained glass and numerous posters and stamps. Special exhibits are planned from April 25 through September 28, 2008 in Brussels and all over Belgium. A major highlight will be the outdoor sculpture exhibition to be held at  the Solvay Park around the prestigious Chateau de La Hulpe.

The “Fondation Folon” located in the ancient farmhouse of the Château de La Hulpe, only  a few minutes away from Brussels, offers a permanent exhibition of the works of Jean-Michel Folon. A dynamic and playful exhibit presents the artist's favorite themes and techniques including a special display of his illustrations of the works of great authors such as the complete works of Jacques Prévert, Kafka's Metamorphosis, Albert Camus' 'Pluies  de New-York', and Jean Giono's  'L'homme qui plantait des arbres', to name but a few.

In Belgium Folon’s work is to be found from the seaside town of Knokke where his sculpture “The Sea, the grand sculptor” is sitting on a sea breaker and is covered entirely by the sea at every high tide; to the Belgian Ardennes where his stained glass windows adorn the 11th century Romanesque church of Waha.

To present Jean-Michel Folon in a nutshell entails skimming through over forty years of creation. In 1969 he had his first show in the United States at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, followed closely by exhibitions in Tokyo, Venice, Milan, London, Sao Paulo, Geneva, Brussels, and Paris. His works are held in the most prestigious private and public collections worldwide. Jean-Michel Folon passed away October 2005. For more information check out the website of the Foundation.
