Flemish Tapestries from the Burgundian Dukes
Abbey of Saint Peter, Ghent
November 21, 2008 through March 29, 2008
This exhibition brings together magnificent tapestries from the Spanish royal collection, from several Spanish private collections and from the sixteenth-century tapestries from St.Peter’s Abbey.
Important weaving centers such as Brussels, Oudenaarde, Mechelen and Tournai produced, with unequalled technical precision, the most splendid weaving patterns often designed by famous painters.
Tapestries made in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries were utilized as ‘mobile frescoes’ by the Burgundian dukes, Emperor Charles V and King Philip II, accompanying them on their travels through Europe to bring comfort, aesthetic pleasure and social prestige.
Visitors will relish in the work of weavers who transformed wool, silk, gold and silver thread into sumptuous and marvelous textiles.
The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Entrance fee is
€ 5. For more information on this exhibition and others held at Sint Peter's in Ghent visit the website of the abbey. |
