Historic Centre Canal and Hydraulic Boat Lifts
UNESCO World Heritage

The four hydraulic boat-lifts of the historic “Canal du Centre” constitute a remarkably well-preserved and complete example of a late-19th-century industrial landscape.

By adding the boat-lifts of the Canal du Centre to the UNESCO World Heritage list, UNESCO recognized the exceptional testimony they bear to the remarkable hydraulic engineering developments of 19th-century Europe.

Don’t miss a unique opportunity to visit the lifts, swing bridge and machine rooms. Reservation is strongly recommended as the number of places available on the boats is limited. The four lifts can be found in the Canal du Centre between the cities of La Louvière and Mons.

How to get there: The road to the lifts (ascenseurs in French) is well-signposted from the E19 highway coming from Brussels. Take exit # 21 and follow signs to Ascenseurs/Cantine des Italiens.

Opening hours: April 29 to October 29 every day (except Monday and Public Holidays). Boat departures are at 10 am and 2 pm. Fee for the boat trip and the visit to the machine room is 12 Euro for adults, 10 Euro for students and senior citizen and 8 Euro for children under the age o 12.
