100th Anniversary of Tintin creator Herge

Belgium celebrates the centennial of Tintin creator Hergé with a Tintin fresco greeting visitors arriving at Brussels South station. Belgian artist Hergé, the pen name of Georges Remi was born   in 1907. Tintin first appeared on January 10, 1929 in Le Petit Vingtième, a children’s supplement to a Belgian newspaper. On January 10th, 2007, the fresco was unveiled to coincide with the official 'birth' day of Tintin.

The Adventures of Tintin, a young Belgian reporter and traveler soon became a successful series   of comic books later adapted for both film and theater. The adventures of the boy reporter, his faithful dog Snowy and the irascible Captain Haddock still sell 3 million copies every year in 50 countries.

In addition to the fresco, travelers will also discover that one of the high-speed trains linking Brussels to Paris has been adorned with cartoons from the Tintin series.

The famous hero has been credited with awakening the wanderlust in many a reader and the legacy of George Remi is kept alive by the Hergé Foundation. The book Tintin in Tibet was Hergé’s favorite and for many around the world their very first knowledge of Tibet has come from the book.
