The city of Liege, in Belgium’s French-speaking region, is proud to announce the opening of a new five-star Crowne Plaza hotel. Located right in the historic, cultural and commercial center of Liège, the hotel is a superb architectural ensemble of two former aristocratic palaces. The property offers meeting spaces, a spa and a restaurant for guests and patrons.
Liege, just one-hour from Brussels by train, is at the crossroad of Maastricht, in Holland, Cologne, in Germany, the country of Luxembourg and Northern France. Those coming to Liége by train will be welcomed with views of the striking, new train station designed by Santiago Calatrava, which connects Liége to many popular European destinations. Another modern architectural marvel is the new Mediacity Mall, created by the visionary and unconventional designer Ron Arad, whose work can be seen in New York’s Crosby hotel and was also the subject of a MoMA exhibit.
The city, the birthplace of Charlemagne, is also famous for its palace, gothic churches, great nightlife and the Curtius Museum with its amazing collections of glass and Medieval Arms. There is great shopping around every turn and relaxing cafés and restaurants, like Bistro d’en Face, on each corner. Throughout the month of December, Liege holds one of Belgium’s largest Christmas markets.
Adventure seekers can rent a car from Liege and visit the area. There is the famous town of Spa, the mother of all spas, has great restaurants like l’Art de Vivre and lovely bed & breakfasts, as well as a castle where you can spend the night: Manoir de Lébioles. The Spa-Francorchamps Formula 1 racetrack, the most beautiful in the circuit, and the Abbaye de Stavelot, with its great art exhibitions, are all short trips from Liege. Don’t forget to unwind with a beer at the brewery in Val Dieu. There are also the World War II American cemeteries of Henri Chapelle, just outside Liege, and the Ardennes American Cemetery, in Neuville en Condroz. Both are very emotional and beautiful sites to visit.
