Flower Carpet on the Grand'Place in 2012
Flower Carpet on the Grand Place in Brussels
August 2012

The famous Tapis de Fleurs (carpet of flowers) covers almost 20,000 square feet right in the center of the Grand'Place. In 2010, the theme of the carpet was a celebration of the European Union, designed by 23 year old Belgian designer, Antione Durieux. With a different carpet design each year, it is the work of flower growers who specialize in growing begonias. These flowers offer a wide range of bright and vibrant colors, while also being able to withstand difficult conditions. After all, the craftsmen assemble the begonias directly on to the cobble-stones of the square without a layer of soil.
Your next chance to come and admire the Flower Carpet on the Grand Place in Brussels is August 14th 2012. Construction takes place from 1 to 8pm on Tuesday the 14th and the exhibition opens that night at 10pm with a 5minute sound and light show. The colored plant tapestry can be viewed best from the balcony of Hotel de Ville, which is open to the public from 9 am to 11 pm. The balcony of City Hall will be open for visitors: Admission is €5 and children under 12 enter for free. Every evening at 10.00 pm, 10.30 pm and 11.00 pm a celebration of ligths and music will fill the Grand-Place. The exhibition will remain open until the 19th.
