Mons often evokes thoughts of WWI for most tourists. Mons is now home to attractions and memorials remembering the presence of British and German troops in 1914. It also is the home to ancient Roman vestiges which are on display.
Mons is also a town with deep traditions. The town's annual celebrations of "Lumeçon" and "Le Car d'Or" highlight the remaining importance of these traditions to the people of Mons.
Van Gogh lived in Mons for a period of time before living in Provence. His home is open for tours and public visits.
The city of Mons has been selected to become one of the two European Capitals of Culture in 2015. Mons had to comply with strict criteria in order to achieve such an honor. Cities vying for the title must prepare a specific cultural programme, which highlights the European dimension of the event and encourages participation by citizens. The programme is required to have a lasting impact and contribute to the long-term cultural and social development of the city.
