Durbuy, the smallest city in the world, is undeniably picturesque. How the city came into being is a complete mystery, although its history presumably began in the Middle Ages. Numerous villages in the region were mentioned as early as the eighth and ninth centuries but Durbuy did not make an official appearance until the 11th century, when its feudal fortified castle was built.
Durbuy was first noted in history when its 11 th Century castle was constructed. As a result, Durbuy formed a key part of the defences of Luxembourg and La Roche.
In 1331 Durbuy received the title of "town" from Jean de Bohème for services rendered. Ever since then, Durbuy's inhabitants have prided themsleves on living in the "smallest town on earth".
